GLP-1s: Coming Off

So, you’ve been using a GLP-1 like Wegovy or Mounjaro. Maybe it’s been life-changing. Your appetite is under control, the scales are moving in the right direction, and for the first time in years you feel hopeful. (Or maybe it hasn’t worked, the side effects are too much to bear, or you simply can’t afford to continue)

But then the question creeps in: “How long do I stay on this?”
And that’s where the conversation usually stops.

We talk endlessly about starting GLP-1s … the dosing, the side effects, the price, the media hype but we rarely hear anything about coming off . Yet that’s the part that really matters if you care about your long-term health.

Coming off GLP-1s. What happens next?

Why nobody talks about “the exit plan”

Pharmaceutical marketing makes the attraction of starting all too easy. Scroll through social media and you’ll see endless before-and-after stories often championed by paid-for influencers. Now many of them are genuine and some are nothing short of lifechanging not to say miraculous. But how many talk about what happens six or twelve months later, when the injections stop?

!! ITS NOT YOUR FAULT!!

We know from the clinical trials that two-thirds of the lost weight comes back within a year once the drug is stopped. That’s not your failure. It’s basic human physiology. When GLP-1 levels fall, appetite hormones rebound, energy expenditure drops, and old habits quietly return.

At ProLongevity, we don’t see this as a personal weakness.  We see it as predictable biology, one that can be anticipated, planned for, and managed. But only if we start asking the right questions before the last pen runs out.

The questions worth asking

Instead of “When should I stop?”  try these instead:

– What does my body need to maintain this new weight without a weekly injection?

– How can I preserve my muscle mass (and bone for that matter) and, crucially my  metabolic rate during the transition?

– Am I eating in a way that naturally supports GLP-1 and leptin balance?

– What happens if I stop abruptly. Could that affect my glucose levels or mood?

– What systems (food tracking, CGM feedback, support group, accountability) are in place to help me stay on track?

These are not medical trivia. They are the very foundations for long-term success.

We talk endlessly about starting GLP-1s - but rarely about coming off them. Yet that's the part that really matters.

Coming off doesn’t mean going backwards

There’s a myth that you must stay on GLP-1s forever to maintain results. (Of course that works well for the profits of the Pharmaceutical Industry and the Providers. But for your personal well-being and your bank account? Not so much!)  In truth, what you need is an exit strategy. A pharmacist-led, lifestyle-centred, evidence-based off-ramp that keeps the benefits while minimising rebound.

In our article How GLP-1 Drugs Work for Weight Loss we explained how these drugs mimic natural hormones that slow digestion, reduce appetite, and improve insulin control. The trick is to recreate those same effects but naturally. Through food quality, protein intake, meal timing, sleep, stress, and movement.

It’s not as fast as an injection, but it’s infinitely more sustainable.

Starting the conversation

This blog isn’t a “coming off “ guide. It’s an invitation. Over the coming weeks we’ll share stories, science, and strategies to help you navigate life after GLP-1s, including how to taper safely, stabilise blood sugar, and rebuild a resilient metabolism.

But for now, we’d love to hear from you.

– Are you thinking about coming off your GLP-1?

– Have you already tried and struggled?

– What would make the process easier, safer, or less scary?

Final thought

Coming off a GLP-1 isn’t the end of your journey quite the reverse.  It’s a new beginning of learning how to live metabolically healthy, without medication. And that’s exactly what ProLongevity is here for.
