I’m Stopping My “Fat-Jabs” Soon – And I’m Terrified of Regaining the Weight

Key Takeaways
Stopping without a plan: weight regain is inevitable.
If you do nothing else, eat more protein.
If you’ve been using one of the GLP injections like Ozempic, Wegovy, or Mounjaro, chances are you’ve seen incredible results. The scales move, cravings fade, and for the first time in years, food finally feels manageable. You’re managing the food, it’s no longer managing you?
But here’s the big fear: what happens when you stop?
You’re not alone. Thousands of people across the UK and worldwide are asking exactly the same question. And the evidence is clear: stopping GLP-1s without a plan leads to regaining much (75% plus) of the lost weight. But don’t panic… there are strategies that can help.
So let’s unpack what the science says, and how you can protect your hard-won progress.
Why Do People Regain Weight After Stopping the GLP-1 Injections?
Broadly speaking GLP-1 drugs (Ozempic/Wegovy) and dual GLP-1/GIP drugs (Mounjaro) work by:
- Suppressing appetite: you naturally eat less
- Slowing digestion: meals keep you fuller for longer
- Reducing “food noise:” those nagging thoughts about snacks calm down
When the drug is stopped, these effects wear off. Hunger and cravings return, digestion speeds up, and calorie intake creeps back up. You fall off the wagon.
Clinical trials tell the same story:
- In the STEP-1 extension trial, people who stopped semaglutide regained two-thirds of their lost weight within a year.
- In SURMOUNT-4, those who stopped tirzepatide regained about 14% of their body weight, while those who stayed on it maintained or even lost more.
The Takeaway
Stopping without a plan: weight regain is inevitable.
Can You Stop the Jabs Without Regaining?
The short answer: yes, but it takes work. A LOT of work…
Research shows that lifestyle strategies, done properly, can make a huge difference. Unlike injections, these don’t stop working when you stop paying for them.
Here are the most effective, evidence-backed strategies we’re aware of:
1. Prioritise Resistance Training
When you lose weight quickly (with or without GLPs), you risk losing muscle and bone as well as fat. Less muscle = lower metabolism = easier regain. (Less bone = frailty in older age)
But there’s a solution: resistance training (weights, resistance bands, bodyweight exercises).
A 2024 study following people after liraglutide (an older GLP-1) found that those who exercised regained far less than those who didn’t, even a year after stopping.
Start strength training now, before you stop. It protects muscle, metabolism, and long-term success. (And your bones of course!)
2. Eat Protein at Every Meal
Protein is your secret weapon. It keeps you fuller for longer, protects lean mass, and prevents the “post-jab hunger surge.”
- Aim for around 1.5g per kg of body weight per day (So if you weigh 70kg, aim for at least 100g of protein)
- Build meals around protein: eggs, fish, poultry, red meat, greek yoghurt, tofu, cottage cheese
3. Keep Your Carbs Smart and Steady
GLP-1s blunt blood sugar spikes. Once you stop, those swings can come roaring back, triggering hunger and cravings.
- Swap ultra-processed carbs for low-glycaemic, whole foods (veg, pulses, whole grains)
- Avoid sugary drinks, “innocent” smoothies, and refined snacks (they hit harder once the drug effect wears off)
- In general, “Keep of the carbs!”
4. Sleep More, Stress Less
Poor sleep and stress crank up ghrelin (the “hunger hormone”), raise insulin and make you hungrier.
One clinical trial showed that simply extending sleep by one hour cut daily calorie intake by ~270 calories: that’s almost a stone of fat-gain saved over a year.
Build a sleep routine as part of your weight-maintenance plan.
5. Monitor, Don’t Ignore
People who weigh themselves regularly are more likely to maintain weight loss, because they can act fast when things creep up.
- Daily or weekly weigh-ins are fine
- Set a “red line” (e.g. +2kg) where you act immediately (adjust diet, exercise, or consider a short “reset” plan)
6. Consider Periods of Fasting: a “Booster” Reset
The DiRECT diabetes remission trial in the UK showed that going back to a total diet replacement (TDR) for just a few weeks can “reset” regain. But we’re not fans of synthetic, meal replacements. We think fasting is a better option (But take advice: it’s not for everybody!)
If your weight drifts, don’t wait until you’re back at square one—do a short reset early.
7. Think About Tapering, Not Stopping Cold
Some clinics are now tapering GLP-1 doses over weeks rather than stopping suddenly. Early evidence suggests this may make the transition easier, though it’s not yet proven in large trials.
Bottom Line
If you stop GLP-1 jabs with no plan, regain is almost guaranteed. But with the right strategy: strength training, protein-first eating, smart carbs, good sleep, regular monitoring, and booster resets—you can hold onto your success.
At ProLongevity, we’ve already helped clients build these habits, whether they’re still on GLPs or ready to stop. Because the truth is: jabs can start the journey, but lifestyle keeps you there.

Foundayo (Orforglipron): The New UK Weight-Loss Pill – Is It Really a ‘Treatment for Life’?
A new daily GLP-1 weight-loss pill has been approved in the UK. Some headlines are already calling it a potential “treatment for life”. Foundayo clearly works but the science does not yet tell us that everyone who starts it will stay on it, or need it, for life.
